External hardriveEMMC, a hospital in Maine USA, has taken over a month to notify cardiac patients that their records have been stolen. An external hard drive containing the personal data and medical history of over 600 patients went missing just before Christmas.

The hospital delayed letting the affected parties know in the hope that the missing hard drive would miraculously turn up again somewhere. The memory device contained patients data such as names, date of birth, date of care, medical record numbers, medical conditions, and images of their ablation.

Fortunately, the stolen data is unlikely to lead to any identity theft; as it doesn’t include Social Security numbers, financial information or home addresses. Nevertheless, the FBI is now on the case and worried patients can call a helpline.
