Durham students hit by WannaCry
As well as the NHS and Nissan’s Sunderland car plant, students at Durham Sixth Form Centre also suffered collateral damage from the WannaCry ransomware attack last spring.
Several students lost coursework that would have counted towards their A and AS results. Security experts have criticised the college for being panicked into paying the £1,500 ransom demand, which nevertheless failed to retrieve all of the encrypted schoolwork – leaving itself wide open to future exploitation.
Best advice to students is to back up everything, update anti-virus regularly and be on the alert for rogue software.
